I am thrilled to announce the audible version of Deep Denial: The Persistence of White Supremacy in United States History and Life. Deep Denial, an award-winning book by David Billings, was first published a month before the 2016 election. This audible edition, with a 2024 epilogue written with his wife/partner, Margery Freeman, is crucial in our current fight for justice.
Deep Denial answers the question: Why is racism still with us, and how do we overcome it? David traces the evolution of white supremacy from colonial Virginia to our own times. Each chapter begins with an intimate and unsparingly personal account from his own life, which he reads himself in the audible version. Margery Freeman, who worked closely with him on the book, reads many of the narrative sections. The 2024 epilogue includes a dialogue between Margery and David, speaking to our nation’s urgent challenges.
Journalist and civil rights pioneer, Charlayne Hunter-Gault said about Deep Denial: “No one speaks to racism and its cure better than David Billings, a white Southerner who has seen it all. His is a voice that needs to be heard. It is a voice with perfect pitch.”
I urge you to read or listen to -- and then promote -- Deep Denial with your friends, colleagues, and libraries.
